* Download and install the Alexa toolbar and then surf your own site.
* Place the Alexa widget on your Web site. It will entice visitors to use it
and, you know, each click counts.
* Write useful, quality content, mostly webmaster-related. Promote it on
webmaster forums and on social networking sites. The idea is to get as many
computer and Internet savvy people as possible to visit your site, since the
probability that they will have the Alexa toolbar installed is high.
* Write blogs and articles about Alexa. You will get links to your pages that
will help improve your ranking.
* Try to get your articles on such blog sites as digg.com, del.icio.us, or www.stumbleupon.com

Supposedly Alexa claims to have 10 million downloads. You figure if they padded the numbers, there must be at least 1/10th of that many downloads out there... 1 or 2 million downloads is still a pretty good number to get a good estimate of how popular the site ranks, IMO.

default time spans, and then modify the part of the URL that looks like this:
traffic_details?&range=3m
In this range parameter, "d" = day, "m" = month and "y" = year.
Replacing "&range=3m" with "&range=8d" will cause the graph to span for 8 days.

Alexa's directory is powered by the Open Directory Project.

Alex ranking is totally dependent on the volume of visitors. Unless you are getting regular number of visitors, you would not be able to get top position in alex ranking.
